The Motive Behind Preaching

The motive behind preaching.  Some preach out of good will — but others out of envy…rivalry…and selfish ambition.

Paul writes to the church in Philippi – “But what does it matter?  The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached.  And because of this I rejoice.”

What can we learn from this?

First.  It is the content that must be right.  But…Paul’s emphasis here is on motivation.

Second.  It is God’s Word that God honors.  Even if the messenger is guilty of alternative motives…the Word of God is still true.

Ultimately…God will be the judge.  He will pass judgment on motive.

Having said that…it is still important and essential that the messenger be a model of the message.
